PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Tom Wimpy

Sometimes I really am amazed by Diamond Lake.  The other day while fishing off my dock, two bald eagles came flying by danced in the sky. One settled in a tree about 150 feet from me, while the other continued soaring 50 feet above my head. That’s why I come to the lake.  Of course all of the days are not so enchanting.  I see a lot of developments around the lake that cause me some concern. But people are people.  One thing I have is learned is to be careful with my actions and words. It has come back to haunt me.

The Clean-Up Day (June 16 from 8 to 11 AM) is being planned. The Social BBQ is following from 12 to 3 PM and there is a hike set-up for 4 PM.  That will be a very busy day.  I wonder what the eagles would think of all of this.  I’m sure the pair will be watching, since the hike is near the eagle’s nest that was active last year (and other years).

The Pend Oreille County Development Plan is open for public comment until June 10.  I would encourage everyone to review it and see what direction you want the lake to go.  I am disappointed at some of the recommendations and will be commenting as a property owner.  Hopefully, I’m not the only one that sees Diamond Lake going to an urbanized growth area and losing the natural ecological processes that are attractive to me.

The people that live and/or own property on the lake need to make some choices on how to best protect and preserve the natural resources that we have here.  I hope that we can bring this up at the Annual Meeting in August and find enough common ground to move forward with the efforts needed.

One final thought is on milfoil.  We are in need of some help in mapping and surveying the entire lake this year.  So, if you find some milfoil, please let the board know about it.  We also need help on the milfoil extraction barge. There is definitely some to pull.  If you are interested in volunteering, please let someone on the board know or send us an email.  These ongoing efforts have kept the milfoil somewhat manageable so far, but it will not last if we don’t keep up the effort.

Well, I need to get back to the everyday stuff, so I’ll see you around the lake or at the Social.
